Hut House - New Construction
Whitstable Kent UK
Contract Value - £160,000
Situated on the Whitstable shoreline sandwiched between a mis-fit esplanade of houses and the start of a row of beach-huts, Hut House acts as an important full stop to the architecture of the town. Our inspiration was to enhance views out to the sea and welcome light in whilst maintaining privacy for our clients and accordingly the house presents contrasting faces according to where it is being viewed and how it is being used.
From the front, the fenestration is deliberately kept small scale with high window cills to ensure that privacy is maintained through limiting views in. However the back opens out onto a new raised terrace with larger more expressive areas of glazing. Important views that we have created from within the house - a view of the sunset or horizon - are signified as 'special' to appear as frameless cutouts carved from the wall.
The red cedar weatherboarding echoes the forms and rhythms of the neighbouring beach-huts and it will weather gradually to a silver finish that mirrors the relationship Hut House has with its harsh yet inspirational setting.
